Information Technology, networking & emerging trends

Program Description

The ITnet (formerly Computer Networking) program utilizes the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum to prepare students for exciting careers in Information Technology, commonly referred to as IT. Students will have access to expert, educational IT content and to a rich learning experience through online media. Engaging activities include animated simulations, videos, and interactive quizzes, along with valuable hands-on lab exercises for real world experience.

Students in ITnet receive exposure to many different career areas including:

IT Essentials: The Cisco Networking Academy’s IT Essentials course gives students basic computer repair knowledge and skills, which prepares them for the CompTIA A+ industry certification and entry-level computer support careers.

CCNA Routing and Switching: To prepare students for Cisco’s CCENT & CCNA industry certifications and entry-level networking careers, we utilize the Cisco Networking Academy CCNA courses. These courses give students a foundation in basic routing and switching for wired and wireless networks.

PROGRAMMING AP Computer Science Principles: This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of computer science.

Python and C++:
Students will learn the fundamentals of coding, using the Python and C++ programming languages. This gives them a start towards entry-level programming careers.

The more certifications an individual earns, the more marketable they become in the industry. Our program offers a great jump-start to a future in IT as well as preparing students for entry-level positions upon graduation.

2017-18 Accomplishments

We had four students attend the 2018 SkillsUSA State Competition in Grand Rapids, MI on April 20-22, 2018.  Congratulations to Vance Plummer, a senior this year from Imlay City, for winning a gold medal in Internetworking.  Vance will be attending the national competition in Louisville, Kentucky in June. Also, congratulations to Joseph Gehman, a Lapeer home school senior for winning a bronze medal in Internetworking. CyberPatriot

The CyberPatriot competition is a security competition sponsored by the United States Air Force.  This year, we put together a team of Daniel Baki (North Branch), Cole Bosma (Imlay City), Nathan Church (Lapeer), Matthew Dewey (Lapeer), Ben Parton (North Branch), and Vance Plummer (Imlay City).  They competed throughout several rounds of competitions, and we congratulate them for making it to the State Round GOLD Tier and finishing 1st in Michigan in that Tier. Field Trips

On October 24, 2017, students visited Quicken Loans Data Center in Troy, MI.  Students were given a tour of the large data center by a long time network employee and had the opportunity to hear about working in the IT field and ask questions of an experienced IT professional. December 8, 2017, students visited Mott Community College’s Flint main campus.  Students were able to tour the college campus, attend several sessions with college professors, and participated in a panel discussion with former Mott students who are now employed in the IT field.  It was a great field trip to ensure all students have had the opportunity to visit a college or university. Custom Builds

3 small groups completed custom built computers for our lab - A.M. students Brent Walker (Lapeer), Chris Watson (Dryden), and Matt Senko (Lapeer); A.M. students Grant Rose (North Branch), Jacob Ruhlman (North Branch), Lorance Sheldon (Lapeer), and Avery Gronda (Lapeer); P.M. students Kody Hurd (North Branch), Megan Wisswell (North Branch), and Michael Duty (North Branch).  Each year students do a group project based on the customer's (instructor) requirements. They price out all of their parts, create a presentation, and present their project to the board (classmates) to be reviewed. The best product meeting the criteria is then chosen to be built by the students for use in our lab. Community Service

In keeping with our annual tradition, the ITnet class collected new, unwrapped toys during the holiday season to be donated to Toys for Lapeer County Kids.  All toys donated stay within Lapeer County, helping to ensure that children in our area receive a gift over the holidays. Again this year, the barrel was overflowing with gifts.
