ITnet

Information Technology, networking & emerging trends

Program Description

The ITnet (formerly Computer Networking) program utilizes the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum to prepare students for exciting careers in Information Technology, commonly referred to as IT. Students will have access to expert, educational IT content and to a rich learning experience through online media. Engaging activities include animated simulations, videos, and interactive quizzes, along with valuable hands-on lab exercises for real world experience.

Students in ITnet receive exposure to many different career areas including:

COMPUTER REPAIR
IT Essentials: The Cisco Networking Academy’s IT Essentials course gives students basic computer repair knowledge and skills, which prepares them for the CompTIA A+ industry certification and entry-level computer support careers.

Linux Essentials: The Linux Essentials course covers the basics of installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the open source Linux operating system.

NETWORKING
CCNA Routing and Switching: To prepare students for Cisco’s CCENT & CCNA industry certifications and entry-level networking careers, we utilize the Cisco Networking Academy CCNA courses. These courses give students a foundation in basic routing and switching for wired and wireless networks.

CyberSecurity Essentials: The CyberSecurity Essentials course provides an introduction to trends in cybersecurity and highlights the need for a skilled security workforce.

PROGRAMMING
Python and C++: Students will learn the fundamentals of coding, using the Python and C++ programming languages. This gives them a start towards entry-level programming careers.

Code.org AP Computer Science Principles: This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of computer science.

The more certifications an individual earns, the more marketable they become in the industry. Our program offers a great jump-start to a future in IT as well as preparing students for entry-level positions upon graduation.

Computer Service and Repair
Second year ITnet (formerly Computer Networking) students offer computer service and repair to the community for a donation. This is a unique opportunity for students gain real world experience. See our flyer for more information.

2016-17 ITnet Events and Accomplishments

SkillsUSA
Matthew Schuster, a senior from Almont attended the 2016 SkillsUSA National Championships in Internetworking.  He represented Michigan and won a bronze medal, finishing 3rd in the nation.  We had four students attend the 2017 SkillsUSA State Competition in Grand Rapids, MI on April 7-9, 2017.  Congratulations to Joshua Pasek, a senior this year from North Branch, for winning a bronze medal in Internetworking.

CyberPatriot
The CyberPatriot competition is a security competition sponsored by the United States Air Force.  This year, we put together a team of William Gomes (Quest), Harrison Gould (Lapeer), Joshua Pasek (North Branch), Richard Piec (Lapeer), Trevor Purves (Lapeer), and Austin Smith (North Branch).  They competed throughout several rounds of competitions, and we congratulate them for making it to the State Round GOLD Tier and finishing 2nd in Michigan in that Tier.

Governor’s Cyber Challenge
In 2016, Governor Snyder invited high school students to participate in a unique cybersecurity competition in teams of 3.  We had a team of 3 who advanced to the final round of competition, which was held at the North American International Cyber Summit (NAICS) on October 17, 2016.  Congratulations to Noah Hull (Imlay City Senior), Joshua Pasek (North Branch Senior), and Austin Smith (North Branch Senior) for finishing 5th in the state.

Cisco NetRiders

Cisco NetRiders is Cisco’s competition for high school and college networking academy students throughout the United States and Canada.  Our class participated in Round 1.  Several of our students made it through to Round 2.  Congratulations to Vance Plummer (Imlay City Junior) for finishing 44th in the IT Essentials Round 2 event, Daniel Baki (North Branch Junior) for finishing 56th in the IT Essentials Round 2 event, Matthew Dewey (Lapeer Junior) for finishing 84th in the IT Essentials Round 2 event, Jacob Mroz (Imlay City Junior) for finishing 87th in the IT Essentials Round 2 event, Shane Verschure (Imlay City Junior) for finishing 120th in the IT Essentials Round 2 event, Joshua Pasek (North Branch Senior) for finishing 89th in the CCENT Round 2 event, Harrison Gould (Lapeer Senior) for finishing 116th in the CCENT Round 2 event, and to William Gomes (Quest Senior) for finishing 243rd in the CCENT Round 2 event.

Academy Olympics
This year, we participated in Henry Ford Community College’s Academy Olympics.  2 students – William Gomes (Quest Senior) and Joshua Pasek (North Branch Senior) took part in the event.  Upon arrival, they were separated and placed onto competition teams with other high school and college students.  In addition to competing, they also heard from a Cisco Engineer, to get a feel for what it is like to work in the industry and for Cisco.

Field Trips
On October 14, 2016, students attended Lawrence Technological University’s event in Southfield, MI.  Students were able to tour the college campus, attend several sessions of their choice to see what it is like to take a college course, and even enjoyed lunch in the university cafeteria.  It was a great field trip to ensure all students have had the opportunity to visit a college or university.

On January 28, 2017, our CyberPatriot team visited Baker College to practice for CyberPatriot with Baker’s Cyber Defense Team.  Our students were able to pick up a few tips from these college students who compete in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC).

On March 20, 2017, our entire class visited Baker College’s campus in Flint, MI. Students were able to hear from a few of Baker’s IT Instructors, tour the campus, and have a pizza lunch to end the visit.

Custom Builds
A.M. students David Carter (North Branch Junior) and Ben Parton (North Branch Junior) completed a custom built computer. Each year students do a group project based on the customer's (instructor) requirements. They price out all of their parts, create a PowerPoint slide show, and present their project to the board (classmates) to be reviewed. The best product meeting the criteria is then chosen to be built by the students for use in our lab. These students build a blue and white show computer with some amazing specs, liquid cooling, and some really cool LED lights.  We plan to use it for troubleshooting customer equipment and for display purposes at our open houses and recruiting visits to the local high schools.

Community Service
In keeping with our annual tradition, the ITnet class collected new, unwrapped toys during the holiday season to be donated to Toys for Lapeer County Kids.  All toys donated stay within Lapeer County, helping to ensure that children in our area receive a gift over the holidays.  This year, the barrel was overflowing with gifts.
